The
policy study “Opportunities for Syrian fruit and vegetable exports in the EU
market” presents the main results of a research study undertaken by the
National Agricultural Policy Centre, aiming at presenting detailed
information on the penetration of Syrian exports of fruit and vegetables in
the EU markets. The study develops a line of research initiated by a previous
study carried out under the Project GCP/SYR/006/ITA – Phase I, which
examined the impact of the Association Agreement (AA) between Syria and the
EU.
Syrian
interests for improving export performance of fruits and vegetables to the
EU markets are based on: (i) the relative specialisation of Syrian exports
on fresh vegetables (28% of total agricultural export value in 1999), and
fresh fruits (15%); (ii) the signature of the AA, which will open new and
more stable opportunities for Syrian exports; (iii) the dynamism of the EU
fruit and vegetable market for some products of export interest for Syria (eg.
cherries, table grapes, garlic, onions, tomatoes and potatoes); and (iv) the
over-specialisation of Syrian exports on GAFTA countries, which account for
over 90 per cent of Syrian horticultural exports.
