The
Eleventh Scientific Committee (SC) Meeting took place at the NAPC
premises from December 16 to 18, 2007. The SC is composed of two
international members, Mr H. De Haen and Mr. F. De Filippis, and two
national members, Mr M. Yassin and Mr M. Khazma.
The Committee reviewed the NAPC Progress Report for the second half
of 2007. In addition, it discussed the ongoing studies and research
being conducted by the Center, as well as evaluated the recent
activities and the progress attained. |

Under the
Patronage of H.E. Dr Adel Safar Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian
Reform the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry
Areas (ICARDA) and the National Agricultural Policy Center (NAPC)
held the "NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON POLICIES AND INSTITUTIONS TO
ENHANCE FODDER AND FEED AVAILABILITY IN SYRIA" on
November 7th, at NAPC premises.

The
NAPC held a seminar on August 1st about the
“Competitiveness of Agricultural exports”. It was delivered by FAO
consultant Jose Coque, from the University of Valencia at the
NAPC premises. The seminar addressed several topic; globalization,
assessing competitiveness, Syrian ranking
compared to factor driven economies, Syrian
agro-food competitiveness, and other related issues. |

A training
workshop on competitiveness of Agricultural exports was held at the
NAPC premises from 22 to 26 July. The workshop combined the
following items; basic concepts, tools and methods, understanding
case studies in developing countries, applying the methods to the
Syrian value chains. The training was delivered by FAO consultant
Jose Coque. |

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform;
the Arab Agricultural Engineers Federation, the Islamic Development
Bank, and the NAPC jointly organized a training course on
“Agricultural Policies Management” for Palestinian agricultural
engineers of the Palestinian National Authority. The course was hold

The Fifth
Steering Committee Meeting of the FAO Project GCP/SYR/006/ITA “Sustainable
Capacity Consolidation of the National Agricultural Policy Center (NAPC)”
took place on 9-10 May at the NAPC premises.
The Steering Committee is composed of representatives of FAO, Government
of Syria, and Government of Italy.

Under
the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, the
National Agricultural Policy Center (NAPC), supported by the FAO Project
GCP/SYR/006/ITA, organized the 4th National Agricultural Policy Workshop
at Cham Palace, Damascus, on May 8th. This workshop was devoted to the discussion, in at national and
international level, of the results of a major studies prepared by the
NAPC, and by international experts in the field. |

An internal seminar
on economic risk management was held at NAPC premises on January 15.
The Seminar has been delivered by Dr. Carlo Cafiero, and it covered
basics of the economic analysis of risk, issues concerning risk in
agriculture ,private tools for risk management in agriculture, and
policies for risk reduction and farmers' income stabilization. |
